Cobb House Creations: Weaving and Artistic Embellishments - Part 2

Join us for Part 2 of Cobb House Creations, where students will continue their journey of creativity and craftsmanship with a focus on weaving and artistic embellishments.

Throughout the week, students will delve into the art of macramé and weaving, creating stunning wall hangings to adorn the interior of our cobb house. They'll learn traditional weaving techniques using palm branches for the roofing, adding a rustic and natural touch to our shelter.

In addition to weaving, students will explore textile arts by sewing curtains and crafting rag rugs from old rags and shirts. They'll discover the art of repurposing materials, transforming discarded items into beautiful and functional pieces for our cobb house floor.

But the creativity doesn't stop there! Students will also learn to bead curtains for the front door, adding a touch of color and charm to our shelter. They'll use pressed flowers and paper mache to create hanging lanterns, illuminating our cobb house with natural beauty.

Get ready for an immersive experience where students will dive into the vibrant world of wild edibles, medicinal plants, and natural fabric dyes.

Throughout the week, students will embark on a journey of discovery, learning to recognize various wild edibles and plants around the farm. They'll explore the nutritional and medicinal properties of these plants, gaining insights into their domestic uses and fascinating histories. From radish pods to nasturtium leaves, each wild edible will reveal its unique flavors and benefits. Students will also develop an understanding of dangerous plants like poison oak, learning how to identify and avoid them, as well as what to do in case of accidental contact.

Aloe, renowned for its healing properties, will take center stage as students discover its applications in first aid, particularly for cuts and burns. Meanwhile, we’ll explore the culinary and medicinal potential of herbs like rosemary, lavender, and fennel.

In the realm of arts and crafts, students will unleash their creativity with natural dyes. They'll learn about the dyeing process using ingredients like avocado pits, pomegranate skins, eucalyptus leaves, onion skins, and logwood, witnessing the magical transformation of fabric into vibrant hues. Through hands-on experiments, they'll explore the effects of acids and alkalines on natural dyes, engaging in scientific inquiry and hypothesis testing.

Melon Mania: A Summer Splash Adventure

Get ready for a refreshing week of water fun and creative exploration at our Melon Mania summer camp!

Campers will dive into a variety of exciting water games, splashing and laughing their way through relay races, water balloon tosses, and other refreshing activities.

In addition to the water excitement, campers will unleash their creativity with hands-on miniature boat building. Using materials like popsicle sticks, straws, and recycled materials, they'll design and construct their own mini boats, ready to set sail on our final day for an exhilarating boat race.

But the highlight of the week is the Melon Mania itself! Campers will indulge in watermelon eating contests, enjoy watermelon-themed arts and crafts, and even dive into watermelon science experiments to uncover the secrets of this delicious fruit.

As the week comes to a close, campers will put their boats to the test in an exciting race, where they'll cheer on their creations and celebrate the fun and creativity of Melon Mania.

Welcome to Part 1 of Cobb House Creations! Throughout the week, students will embark on an enriching journey of building, painting, and artistic expression while gaining valuable insights into the history and significance of shelter structures throughout time.

As students assist in constructing a second cobb house overlooking our farm, they'll explore the history of shelter structures. From ancient mudbrick houses to medieval timber-framed buildings, they'll learn how shelters protect us from the elements and predators, ensuring safety and comfort.

Through engaging discussions, students will discover the essential role of shelters in providing sanctuary throughout history. From sturdy castle walls to cozy teepees, the diverse array of structures will inspire an appreciation for human ingenuity.

While the cobb house walls dry, students will unleash their creativity through painting and cave art. Inspired by ancient storytelling traditions, they'll create their own cave art pieces, preserving the legacy of Cobb House Creations for future generations.

Throughout the week, students will have the opportunity to develop practical skills in woodworking and sustainable construction practices, with exciting projects such as constructing miniature lending libraries and birdhouses. Each day will be dedicated to a different color of the rainbow, from the passionate reds bursting with energy to the mysterious blues and purples rich in antioxidants. Through hands-on activities, science experiments, and art projects, campers will learn about the nutritional benefits of each hue, connecting them to various parts of the body and essential vitamins and minerals.

We will investigate the secrets of Blue Zone countries, where longevity is attributed to wholesome diets abundant in colorful produce. Campers will engage in discussions about seasonal crops, weather patterns, and the anatomy of plants, gaining a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of food and nature.

By the end of our rainbow-filled adventure, campers will emerge as budding nutritionists, equipped with the knowledge and enthusiasm to embrace a lifestyle filled with delicious, nutritious foods. We’re excited to announce the return of Pioneers Kraft Korner at our Farm Stand this summer! Join us every Thursday and Friday afternoon for a new and engaging activity using natural components straight from the farm. Let your creativity bloom and connect with nature in a fun and hands-on way.

Dirt, Soil, Clay and More: Nature Discovery Camp

Welcome to an exciting journey beneath our feet! In our Dirt, Soil, Clay and More week, campers will explore the mysteries of dirt, soil, and clay through engaging hands-on activities. From crafting mud milkshake concoctions to sculpting clay masterpieces, there's something for everyone to enjoy.

Our exploration begins with a deep dive into the intricate ecosystems thriving beneath the surface. Campers will learn about the essential roles of underground critters like earthworms and rollie-pollies in maintaining healthy soil.

But the excitement doesn't end there! We'll also uncover the hidden communication networks of trees, mushrooms, and plant roots, playing games to simulate their complex interactions. Through experiments and activities, campers will gain a newfound appreciation for the interconnectedness of all living things.

In our art corner, creativity knows no bounds as we paint with mud and craft clay sculptures from recycled materials. Armed with nature's treasures, campers will unleash their imaginations to create stunning artworks and erupting clay volcanoes.

And it's not just about fun and games – we'll also learn about sustainability through the 3 Rs: reduce, reuse, recycle. Campers will explore the lifecycle of plants, master the art of composting, and create colorful compost piles using our lasagna method.

Summer Camp Sessions are for ages 3-10.

Summer Camps are Tuesday-Friday from 8:30am-11:30am.

Cost: $330/week (Includes camp shirt and take-home projects!)

Join us for our extended summer program for our youngest pioneers!

The day of the Little Pioneers commences with singing, physical movement, and storytelling under the shade trees. Afterward, they embark on an adventure walk to the Tipi, stopping to observe nature and farm activities along the way. At the Tipi, children engage in pretend play in a mock Luiseno Tribe Village, which includes a Tipi, play campfire, fishing in the creek, weaving, and gathering acorns. Moreover, they explore nature, STEAM, and themed-based learning centers that focus on language arts, prewriting, fine motor skills, early math, science, sensory bins, and more.

In addition, they visit one learning station such as Nature, Learning Garden, Art, Farm Animal visit, or Kitchen before heading on another adventure walk to the Little Pioneers area. In this area, they enjoy their Snack and Free Play, where they practice social interaction and move between play stations such as play kitchens & farm stands, puppet theater, toy animals, cars/trucks, sensory tubs, puzzles, lacing, drawing, and reading books.

Finally, they end their day with singing, dancing, and sharing a recap of the day before pick up, where they started in the morning.
